Best Takeout for Fall 2020

I recently created this list for a good friend visiting from out of town. It’s a mix of core restaurants that I visit and staples that are underrated. I’ve tried takeout from all of the below besides Bird Bird Biscuit.

DINNER

ATX COCINA | On the pricier side, but not your average takeout. Watch ReOpen Doc’s interview.

BETTER HALF | The burger won’t let you down, and they have a good variety of options if your crew has trouble agreeing on a dinner spot.

BUFALINA | For when you’re low on wine and want something slightly creative.

CIPOLLINA | Support local, OG Austin with this Clarksville Italian. They won’t let you down (and they’re currently open for dine-in).

LORO | Easy if you’re having people over and want a variety of dishes.

NORTH ITALIA | Dependable pastas, salads, seafood, etc. if people are ordering their own plates. Delivery available through DoorDash.

NUMERO28 | Well done pizza and caesar basics.

P.F. CHANG’S | Guilty pleasure — couldn’t not. Full gluten free menu available.

SWAY | I recommend ordering to-go from the kids menu. (If you do that, please be sure to tip extra well.) Pick it up and pop in for a drink on the outdoor deck during happy hour (4-6pm with deals on all drinks).

40 NORTH | Bufalina takes the cake, but 40 North is great for those of you west of downtown.

68 DEGREES | Simple Italian right next to Deep Eddy. I recommend the patio if you’re comfortable going out.

Swedish Hill pizza | Spend your money on other menu items.

LUNCH / BREAKFAST

BLUE DAHLIA | Order the chicken salad and hummus tartines. (You only need one order per person.) East side location now closed.

BUFALINA DELI AT BREW & BREW | Fair warning, you’ll be full quickly.

BIRD BIRD BISCUIT | I haven’t tried, but it looks amazing. Be sure to order well in advance. Let me know what you think!

FOOD! FOOD! | Order The Mikey. While you’re there, grab king ranch casserole for dinner. Give them a call—no online ordering.

GOLDEN CASTLE @ HOFFBRAU & CO. | The two teamed up to sliders by the half-dozen or dozen, crinkle fries and Whisler’s cocktails optional. Online ordering to come—for now, window ordering only.

LITTLE OLA’S BISCUITS | Olamaie’s pivot during COVID, featuring their famous biscuits.

LOU’S | Eastside Crunch salad add chicken.

SWEDISH HILL | Great bits of everything, including decent prices for rotisserie and sides.

TACODELI | Get the queso. Now open for dinner during COVID.

TEXAS FRENCH BREAD | Currently doing takeout through lunch

TEXAS HONEY HAM | Breakfast tacos (best in town is bacon, egg, potato hash, cheese) or midday sandwiches/salads.

VERACRUZ | I stand by my claim that Texas Honey Ham has the best breakfast tacos in town. Many friends of mine rank Veracruz above TXHH.
